Glossary of Terms
Auto Altitude Adjustment:
allows the patient to travel to different altitudes without having the pressure setting adjusted. Because atmospheric pressure changes with altitude, most machines need adjustment in order to provide the correct pressure at a different altitude.
CPAP: Continuous positive airway pressure
Continuous positive airway pressure is a method of respiratory ventilation used primarily in the treatment of sleep apnea
Hypopnea:
Abnormally shallow breathing or slow respiratory rate where there is a 50% (or greater) reduction in flow and a 3% (or greater) desaturation in the persons O2 levels
Hypoxia:
Hypoxia is a pathological condition in which the body as a whole or region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply.
MAD / MAS: Mandibular Advancement Device / Splint
Mandibular advancement splint is a small plastic device worn in the mouth that may be used for improving the quality of sleep by reducing some types of snoring or sleep apnea.
OSA: Obstructive Sleep Apnea:
Obstructive Sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep.
Oxygen Desaturation:
Oxygen saturation is a relative measure of the amount of oxygen that is dissolved or carried in the blood stream. Normal, safe levels are 94% and greater. An SaO2 (arterial oxygen saturation) value below 90% is termed hypoxia and can be harmful.
PSG: Polysomnography
Polysomnography is a comprehensive recording of the biophysiological changes that occur during sleep.
